I didn't think it was ever possible to get fired and laid off from two jobs within weeks of each other. The company that fired me did so because they deemed me not dependable enough. My car had to have a major brake repair and then the alternator went out the very next week. I did my best to get to Mira Mesa by bus but was only on time the two days I got a ride.
The company that laid me off was obviously in such a desperate state of economy that they were not re-hiring for jobs when people quit or got fired. I was let go on good terms- I can use them as a reference and they agreed if they had an open position in the future (and they could afford to pay me) that they would re-hire me. But it is incredibly bad timing. As it is for a lot of people these days when things like this happen.
My situation is not unique. And what is frightening is that it does not seem like things are going to get any better any time soon. I've heard more than one person say that if we could get a Democrat in the White House things would be better. But better when? In 2006 when Democrats swept both the House and Senate there were a lot of predictions about how much better things were going to be. With the war in Iraq costing billions of dollars every year, and a corrupt executive branch of government that no one seems to be able to collar in, you have to wonder if the current recession, or "slowdown" as President Bush calls it, is only the beginning of something much worse.
One major problem I have not heard many people in government or the media discuss in detail is why our country is billions of dollars in debt to China. During World War II, and afterward, the United States loaned money to Britain and France to help redevelop their worn torn economies. Why is it now when our country is suffering through it's own form of debt, we rush off to borrow money from a Communist style dictatorship?
A real irony is that the Bush Administration has "saved" the flagging economy by sending out a tax rebate check to certain individuals that qualify for it. Hell, I need the money. You know I won't be protesting by burning that shit. But where is that money going to go? Straight to the gas tank, the credit card companies, and the mortgage lenders. What people should be doing with that money, saving or investing it, is just not possible for huge numbers of people who will receive that check.
I have one request for people in government right now, that I have been writing people about for many years- Please, begin impeachment proceedings against President Bush, or Vice President Cheney, or BOTH, if possible. Our own government seems hell bent on helping to run this country into the ground. I want an impeachment trial simply for the pure entertainment value a thing like that has to offer. Nancy Pelosi has to realize that if the roles were reversed, if she were President and Bush or Cheney was Speaker of the House, they would have impeached her saggy ass about three years ago.
Yesterday, I was on hold with several different entities in a row trying to figure out how I am going to pay off certain debts and make rent next month with only a minimal amount of money coming in. While I was on hold with my bank, or EDD, or whomever it was, I considered the possibility that there may be thousands of other people doing the same exact thing at the same exact time all over the country.
Our economy sucks- There are not enough jobs to go around and not enough money in people's pockets to stabilize things. I reminded myself that in a couple years I will need to renew my passport. Possibly, in five or ten years, Iraq's government and economy will be so stable that people will be applying for work visas to go over there and live.
What is it the United States mass produces? Freedom? Democracy? Free trade?
For whom?
